Leadership philosophies are constantly evolving. With the pandemic causing a major global disruption, leaders worldwide have been racing for game-changing development. But surprisingly, this time, development has its focus not just on the numbers, but on holistic growth.

Faisal Hoque, our guest in episode #116 of Women’s Leadership Success Podcast, describes a disruption as something that “totally knocks you off your path”, making you “rethink and reinvent and redo whatever that you have been doing.”

The founder of SHADOKA, NextChapter, and other companies focusing on enabling sustainable and transformational changes, Faisal sits with co-founder and host Sabrina Braham of the Women’s Leadership Podcast for an enriching discussion on what it translates to in the present times. He reveals essential lessons on individual and organizational leadership, women in leadership, empathy in leadership, systemic thinking, experiential learning, and some unforgettable talking points from his book, Lift – Fostering the Leader in You Amid Revolutionary Global Change.

Faisal’s book is inspired mainly by the disruption during the pandemic, including his son’s rare blood cancer, and navigating it while in a technological boom. A good example is telehealth and telemedicine, which have become more efficient and accessible today than ever. He is intrigued by the level of convergence of information technology, manufacturing technology, nanotechnology and biomedical technology that has rapidly revolutionized our lifestyles.

All this change, however, also means you can no longer do most things the pre-pandemic way. Even working the same job has become extremely challenging for so many who’re used to the old ways. Adapting to changing times takes time and practice.

What can you as a leader do to get UNSTUCK from the overwhelming demand for change?

Three questions. Ask yourself:

  1.  What is not working?
  2.  What should you be doing differently?
  3.  Why are you doing what you’re doing?

Knowing your “why” and “what” is the primary step to accepting change. Mindfulness is key to thriving amid changing times.

So, is mindfulness the same as meditation? No, but they’re connected. Though both are conscious practices with profound links, one fosters another. Meditation trains you to become more mindful. Mindfulness is about thinking from a clear consciousness, responding, and not reacting to events. It is about being entirely present in a moment.

How to PREPARE for uncertain times to become transformational women leaders?

For one, cultivate empathy. It is the pillar of transformational women leaders. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes shows you the world in a totally different light, helping you refine and realign your decision-making.

You might not realize this, design thinking too, is based on the principle of empathy. It requires you to understand the audience for your design, the ways to implement it, the lessons from it, and how much it benefits people. Design thinking needs you to see the world from another person’s lens, understand their pain points, and devise efficient solutions.

To connect with your empathetic self, ask yourself:

  1. Why are you doing what you’re doing?
  2. What will be the impact of what you do?
  3. How will you make it happen?

Experiential learning and systemic thinking are the other two keys that help. While experiential learning teaches you learning on the job, with experience and observation, systemic thinking turns it into a repeatable process. Transformational change isn’t a one-time thing; it requires consistent and constant work. Systemic thinking and experiential learning make up the most important ingredients in the formula for ever-lasting success.

Being your own coach to BECOME one of the transformational women leaders

Inspirational women leaders can mindfully notice what level they’re at with their leadership. This demands that they be naturally empathic and mindfully assess what’s happening around them.

They are futuristic, constantly learning and improving their swing to stay ahead in the game.
